Urbancase Report

Dylan and I went and checked out Urbancase's ICFF preview show at Cairo last Thursday. It was a great space, great crowd, and a great show overall! It was fun chatting with Darin about his experiences showing at the ICFF. Since neither of us has been to ICFF, we picked his brain apart asking him about everything involving the process and the show itself.
It was great to see his work in person, since you can really see and appreciate the details and feel the quality of his work. I like how there's a mix of modern sleekness in his bigger pieces as well as the more humorous and playful small accessories, such as the 'Energie Lamp' that's inspired by the high voltage warning signs.
I especially love the new beeswax polaroid candles! Both Jamie & I ended up getting one for ourselves. And I happened to have the similar model camera! Now they're friends. :D
The smell of the besswax is AMAZING.......You can get one, here!On top of all the awesomeness, there were also a bunch of well decorated sugar cookies in the form of polaroid cameras and his voltage shocked guys. Super cute AND delicious!...and I ate too many of them... :P
Best of luck to Darin!

Picture me Rollein'

I'm so excited. I just picked up a classic Rolleicord V twin lens medium format camera today on Craigslist! It's from the mid '50s but has (according to the owner) had less than 10 rolls of film shot on it EVER. It shows too. It's absolutely clean right down to inner workings and the near-perfect leather case.

The best part: it was only $125!

I can't wait to get out there and take my first shots! In the meantime I'll just oogle over my latest find.

F YEAH!

I just have to gloat about the newest edition to my camera collection: A 1960's Nikon F + fun bells and whistles. Back in the day, this camera was the workhorse in many pro photographers' arsenals. Now that I finally picked one up, I know why...this photo-machine is tough as tank, very versatile and takes grrreat photos!

The coolest part about the camera is that the finder is interchangeable. It came with a standard metered finder, but it can be switched out with a waist level viewer like the old TLR Rolleiflexes and Hasselblads. I just got my waist level finder and can't wait to take some shots with it...there's something about the perspective in shooting from waist level that makes things look so much more interesting.

I wanted to share some of my second roll of film (black and white mostly taken in Portland, OR). I'm pretty happy about the way they turned out and can't wait to hit the streets again (packin' the waist level finder this time).

Fakin' it: Poladroid

While we're on the polaroid kick...

I wasn't quite sure how to react when a friend of mine told me about Poladroid, a free program you can download that takes digital images and applies a magical mix of filters to pump out a polaroid-esque effect. You of course can never TRULY replicate the quality of a polaroid nor the experience using the real deal, but long after the film has expired and run out...Poladroid may be our only hope. I was curious, so I downloaded the program expecting the worst (a terrible hack of a filter that didn't come anywhere close to the real thing). Much to my delight, it works quite well (how could I have doubted you Virginie?). It's as easy as finding the desired photo on your computer and dragging the file into the little polaroid camera icon. Poladroid processes for a few seconds and then makes the familiar rolling gear sound the real machine makes. Now you've got a developing polaroid version of your digital file on your desktop slowly transforming. Once developed, it saves as a jpeg. So fun and easy and the resulting images are very close in color and quality to real polaroids.

I even tried to trick it by sending through a photo of a real polaroid, but it barely changed it...very clever poladroid, very clever.

A few more random pola-conversions:
