FURNISHING UTOPIA WORKSHOP / EXHIBITION
Initiated by Portland design duo Studio Gorm, Furnishing Utopia is a touring exhibition of works by 15 international design studios. Following a workshop at the Hancock Shaker Village, where the designers explored the Shaker aesthetic, craft and values, and created design pieces inspired by their minimalism, purity, thoughtfulness and integrity.
After studying Shaker archives, examining the furniture and craftsmanship, and learning about their processes and manufacturing methods, each studio returned home to use this information to reinterpret Shaker design in their own way. The result is "Furnishing Utopia", which was first shown at Sight Unseen Offsite during NY Design Week 2016. The exhibition featured the designers' work alongside selected Shaker artifacts from Hancock Village.
Furnishing Utopia expanded further for 2017 Stockholm Furniture Fair and NY Design Week with the support of Design Within Reach.
Alongside participating in the workshops and designing products for the collection, L&G Studio played a large organizational role in this project: coordinating workshops, studios, photo shoots, exhibitions and graphic collateral to help the team realize this meaningful project, which continues to grow and evolve.
